PLEASANT GROVE MISSIONARY

BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY

The church consists of God’s people.  It is the assembly of believers in Jesus Christ.  The physical building facilitates the fellowship, worship, and ministry of God’s people, but it is not the church.

One hundred thirty-five years ago, Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was the only Baptist church in the community of San Jacinto County.

Many of our forefathers of Mount Moriah Missionary Church recognized a need to have a closer place to worship.  With that in mind, many members band together and purchased the land for the sum of $10.00 and a small building.

Recognizing those gracious members who contributed funds to buy the land to construct the original church building:

  • Sister Dorothy Marie Denson-Dodd (Daughter of Brother Jessie Lee Denson)

  • Brother & Sister Eli Whidby

  • Brother & Sister Eliza Denson

  • Brother & Sister Abe Lee

Twenty-five years later, the desire to build a church closer for members to worship became a reality.

The faithful workers involved in constructing and erecting the building are listed below:

  • Deacon R. A. Denson & wife

  • Deacon M.C. Custard & Sister Josie Custard

  • Sister Charity Davis

  • Sister Emma Custard

  • Reverend B. I. Whidby

  • Deacon L. Lee

  • Deacon William Fletcher

  • Deacon Green Williams

  • Deacon Ned Edmond

  • And many others

Their efforts were a labor of love, and the members today and those of the future will forever be thankful and grateful as recipients of their dedication and hard work.

On 13th of June 2003, God gratefully blessed Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church with a new church site.  The late Sister Audrey Bell Whiting unselfishly donated property in memory of her mother, the late Sister Carrie Lee Edmond – Denson.  A new church was under construction and completed in 2006.  The new church building was dedicated to God on September 24, 2006.

Throughout the years we have been blessed with great spiritual leaders.  The late Reverend Eli. S. Whidby, Jr. was a great pastor in his days and served as moderator of our Central Association for many years.

The following minister and reverends served and worshiped at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church:

  1. Minister M.V. Fletcher served 14 years

  2. Reverend E. S. Smith served 9 1/2 years

  3. Reverend E. S. Dancy served 11 years and several months

  4. Reverend V. R. Jefferson served 6 years

  5. Reverend A. F. Bass served 2 years 4 months

  6. Reverend B. J. Plattenburg served 2 years 4 months

  7. Reverend Nehemiah Fifer served 24 years 11 months 20 days

  8. Reverend Jesse Jones, Jr served 3 years 7 months

The Pleasant Grove family has been tremendously blessed with a truly God fearing pastor, on August 12, 2018. Pastor Micheal Denson, Sr. has been installed and leading his flock for 3 years and 10 months. May God continue to bless and keep Pleasant Grove as we grow in faith.
